Cathédrale
des Sts Michel & Gudule is beautiful
often overlooked twin-towered Cathedral located on
a hillside. It is a majestic building built over a
300 year period from the 13th century and consequently
has a blend of architectural styles including Romanesque,
Gothic and Renaissance.
This grandiose church is named after
Brussels’ male and female patron saints. Because
it is out of the way, it is often missed so you will
have to search out this church but it's well worth
it. The interior is quite airy and light but minus
many of the previous fancy decorations thanks to plundering
by the Protestants in the late 17th century and later
by the French army.
But gorgeous stained glass windows
loom up on all sides of the church - check out the
Chapelle du Saint Sacrement (to the left of the choir)
it was built in 1540 and admire the stained glass
windows and the tapestries.
There's a huge wooden pulpit in
the front of the church showing Adam and Eve being
driven out of Eden by scary looking skeletons and
this was presented by the Jesuits. Look at the statues
of the twelve apostles on each of the massive
columns.
In 1962, the Church was made cathedral with special
referernce to St Michel. Stand outside the front of
the church and gaze at the huge square towers.
