Centre
Belge de la Bande Dessinée & Grand Magasin
Waucquez is the famous Belgian Centre for
Comic Strip Art – located at Rue des
Sables 20, not far from the Grand Place. The centre
plays host to some beautiful, vivid, vibrant comic
strip examples known. The building itself is an impressive
example of art nouveau and was once a large department
store, now called Waucquez Warehouse.
The Belgians have a special relationship with comics
(a more intellectual type of comic than the standard)
and the most famous manifestation is probably Tintin,
the creation of Herge. Hergé is the
most famous Belgian comic author but there are many
more. Many of the books printed in Belgium are comics
and it is a major industry in the country, much of
the product is exported. Other well known Belgian
comic characters are the Smurfs, Lucky Luke,
Blake and Mortimer and so on.
Take a tour through this fascinating comic
culture – and you’ll realise
that the Belgians have a special relationship with
this art form. There is also a huge library, bookshop
and lovely café.
There is an English language booklet available for
the duration while touring the center. The Center
and Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
Also in the centre of Brussels, you’ll notice
specialist shops for back issues of comics. There
are also special tours of Brussels dealing with comics
including twenty huge comic representations on buildings
- see section on Tours.
